Why Fit Test?

Face masks and associated products are now more important than ever where contact with a potential virus (e.g. Coronavirus) is possible. Suitable face masks that fit correctly provide a vital level of protection where poorly fitting or unsuitable masks still leave users vulnerable.

Suitable face fit testing is required to ensure that users are effectively protected during normal activities and that masks are working as intended. Each user is individual, and face fit testing can provide assurance that the mask is appropriate and suitably fitted.

Introduction?

Where respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is used, it must be able to provide adequate protection for individual wearers. RPE can't protect the wearer if it leaks. A major cause of leaks is poor fit – tight-fitting facepieces need to fit the wearer’s face to be effective.

As people come in all sorts of shapes and sizes it is unlikely that one particular type or size of RPE facepiece will fit everyone. Fit testing will ensure that the equipment selected is suitable for the wearer.

What do you need to do?

The best time to do fit testing is at the initial selection stage, when individual users can be given a choice of adequate models of RPE. You should ensure that the make, model, type and size of facepiece that they wore when they had their successful fit test is made available for their use. If an employee wears more than one type of tight-fitting facepiece, then each type of facepiece should be fit tested.

Who can do the face fit?

In line with the Health and Safety Executive Guidance (HSE) RPE fit testing should be conducted by a competent person - you should take steps to ensure that person who carries out the fit test is appropriately trained, qualified and experienced, and is provided with appropriate information to undertake each particular task. Our Face Fit Training “Train the tester” is designed to help you become competent in testing our own team.
A course has been written and provided for over 5 years on training persons to become competent to fit test others on a non-commercial basis (i.e. in-house)

Qualitative fit testing (QLFT)

Qualitative fit testing (QLFT) is a pass/fail test based on the wearer’s subjective assessment of any leakage through the face seal region by detecting the introduction of bitter- or sweet-tasting aerosol as a test agent (WE RECOMMEND BITREX TESTING KIT). QLFT methods are suitable for disposable and reusable half masks; they are not suitable for full-face masks. Although this type of test is based on subjective detection and response by the wearer of the RPE, it is important that it is administered by a fit tester competent in using this method.
